In the fifth semester the project students will explore ideas which might be implementable using an embedded system, using an 8-bit microcontroller. They will decide on the project to be impelemented and proceed with a design. The project will use a development board provided to interface with an interface board which the student will design. A flowchart for the code will be developed and implementation in C will be explored. Sample routines will be developed for parts of the project. All work is documented on a weekly basis and a final project report is submitted. Project management techniques and Communications will also be included

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Outline and submit a written project proposal


Design the project and source components


 Plan and demonstrate an appreciation of the need for project reporting


 Produce a detailed flow chart of project operation


Demonstrate an appreciation of interfacing


 Design a test schedule

Indicative Syllabus

The learner, in consultation with his/her supervisor will explore and conclude on a clear statement of the goal(s) for the embedded system project, which uses an 8-bit microcontroller.

Learners will engage in a design process which will include producing block diagram and schematic and PCB layout of the project hardware.

Research into, sourcing and ordering of required physical components in a timely manner.

Plan the phases in a ‘design-build-test’ project, taking into account time, resource, cost and technical constraints.

Prepare a project plan, a work breakdown plan and process plan for the design, manufacture, assembly, testing and reporting of a ‘design-built-test’ project.
