Description

This module addresses the systematic management of major occupational safety and health risks, their causative agents and health effects.


Indicative Syllabus

Chemical health hazards.

Physico-chemical hazards, including flammability and explosivity.

Storage, containment and transport of dangerous goods.

Safe systems of work including confined spaces, lock-out/tag-out.

Control of major accident hazards.

Chemical exposure in the workplace.

Occupational exposure to vibration.

Occupational exposure to asbestos.

Evaluation of occupational hygiene data.

History & development of occupational ill health. Policy makers and key drivers of occupational health.

Occupational health services, the multidisciplinary team approach, specialist services.

Interpretation of statistics and data related to occupational ill health.

Occupational health effects of physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychosocial hazards.

Vulnerable risk groups, legislative requirements, codes of practice relating to ill health, health surveillance of health issues. Demographics and concerns regarding workforce.

Appropriate occupational health strategies to manage workplace health hazards.

Health screening, health surveillance, absence management, case management, employee assistant programmes.

Promoting health and wellbeing in the workforce. Key performance indicators to measure performance in occupational health.

 


Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
  1. Interpret  the prescribed regulatory framework applicable to occupational exposure.
  2. Differentiate between physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and psychosocial workplace health hazards and recognise appropriate workplace health and well being strategies.

  3. Apply appropriate workplace management strategies to reduce the risk of ill health and diseases using the multidisciplinary approach of prevention, promotion and rehabilitation.

  4. Apply appropriate data analysing and summarising skills to evaluate occupational hygiene data against statutory limits.

  5. Formulate safe systems of work relevant to safety critical work activities.

  6. Appraise how facility design and procedures are employed to protect man and the environment

  7. Participate in groups, communicate and defend findings in relation to prescribed OSH problems.

  8. Integrate the knowledge, principles and theories pertaining to OSH/environment.


Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment - 50%, Final exam - 50%.  Regular assessments may be undertaken via moodle and assignments delivered as per module requirements. Students may be assessed individually or in group environments with a strong emphasis on continual improvement and skill building.


Assessment Facilitites

PC, broadband, final examination centres. Transport to site visits. Remote proctoring facilities will be required.
