This module develops three thematic areas- (i) Structure- an introduction to the function and calculation of loads and forces.  (ii) Materials, Detailing and AssemblyExisting buildings- an introduction to the refurbishment of existing buildings includingan exploration of traditional construction materials and techniques.  Defects in existing building and remedial technologies are introduced as well as period conservation and restoration. (iii) Legislation-Aspects of the building regulations are applied to a studio project.


Indicative Syllabus

Materials, Detailing & Assembly-  Existing Buildings

The focus is on interventions into existing buildings.  Some of this will be taught in the context of the investigation of an existing building which will be linked to a studio project. This is divided into:

  1. An introduction into the typologies, construction and materials of traditional buildings – using case studies or exemplar building review. The typologies relate to a second year design studio project.
  2. Definitions, context and relevance of the refurbishment and repurposing of existing buildings.

  3. Surveys, recording, reports and appraisal of existing buildings and materials

  4. Typical defects in existing buildings- origins and mechanisms of defects, analysis of defects, substructure defects, defects in walls ,claddings and frames, roof defects, floor defects, timber defects, dampness.
  5. Period restoration and conservation. This topic is linked to the analysis of a case study which demonstrates good practice (live where possible).
  6. A broad introduction to a range of refurbishment technologies such as - underpinning, tanking and waterproofing, façade retention, over-cladding, re-roofing and over-roofing etc.

 Legislation-

Basic application of aspects of the Building Regulations to Studio Design projects and case studies, with specific reference to:

  1. Accessibility
  2. Circulation, stairs, lifts and lifts
  3. Fire

 Structure-Units, loads, forces

The focus will be on exploring basic structural systems and applying analysis through basic calculation, diagram and case study. This module develops the introduction into the fundamental principles relating to structure with a basic grounding in the loading and forces working on buildings.


Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to
  1. Conduct a basic survey, appraisal and report of an existing building relevant to a design studio project.

  2. Recognise the definitions and context of the refurbishment, conservation and repurposing of existing buildings.

  3. Identify and anticipate defects and possible remedial solutions in existing buildings relating to their materials and construction techniques.

  4. Clarify the main principles of period conservation and restoration in relation to materials, construction and servicing.

  5. Apply aspects of the Building Regulations to Studio Design projects and case studies in limited contexts.

  6.  Analyse proposed and existing structural systems using simple diagrams and calculations.


Assessment Strategies

Formative and summative assessment modes using a range of techniques which includes individual work, mainly essays, projects, tests presentations, and debate.
