Description

The aim of this work placement is to:

  1. Ensure that the student is familiarised with their workplace.
  2. Ensure that the student is capable of fulfilling the outcomes of their work placements.
  3. Ensure that the student is capable of learning effectively in an online blended mode.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Successfully identify learning outcomes of their work placement and how to achieve and document their work placement objectives.

2.

Study effectively in an online/blended learning environment.

3.

Comply with the basic requirements of new hires in their place of employment.

4.

Carry out elementary workplace tasks as defined by the employer both with and without supervision.

5.

Outline the objectives and organisational structure of their place of employment.

6.

Use IT systems to effectively communicate, document their work and carry out calculations.

7.

Reflect on their learning within the workplace.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The student will be given a series of tasks with specific deadlines to be carried out during the module and will have access to learning materials and support documents that can be accessed as required.  The student will have access to support both from the IT Sligo Placement supervisor as well as a mentor in their place of employment to support them in carrying out the tasks.  The student's activity will be monitored through the submission of weekly online journal entries on which they will be given feedback.  Each task will also require a report to be submitted online on which feedback will also be given.

Module Assessment Strategies

The work placement will be continuously assessed through:

  • Weekly reflective learning journals.

  • Submission of reports on all tasks required by the IT Sligo supervisor.

  • A final report from the industry mentor which will include their performance on work-based tasks.

Repeat Assessments

Students who do not achieve a pass mark in the assessment of the workplace may be required to re-submit specified journals and reports. In the event that they do not pass their mentor evaluation, they may be given time at work to improve their performance and receive another evaluation.

Indicative Syllabus

  • Learn about the purpose of their work placement and how to achieve work placement objectives.

    • Lines of reporting to employer and IT Sligo

    • Deadlines

  • Learn how to submit evidence on work placement.

    • Use of IT tools (Moodle, online diary, WP, Powerpoint, Video-conferencing)

    • Present to IT Sligo supervisor

  • Learning skills

    • Academic Success Module.

  • Fulfil the basic training requirements of new hires in the company they work for.

    • Basic Health and Safety training.

    • Use of in-company communication and IT systems.

    • Understand the structure of the organisation they work for.

    • Develop an understanding of the nature of their employer’s business and of the external business environment of their employer. (Customers, suppliers, etc)

  • Shadow specified co-workers and report on activities to demonstrate an understanding of the work and responsibilities of those co-workers.

  • Carry out specified tasks themselves

  • Employer-specific training to be provided (minimum 2 days)

  • ICT skills:

    • Basic Word Processing

      • Defined skills (editing, formatting, etc)

      • Links to video tutorials to be provided

    • Standard email skills (compose, address, subject, reply, forward, cc, bc, delete, file, search)

    • Calculations in Excel

    • PC File management

    • Web Browsing
