Description

This module covers PCB design particularly with regard to manufacturing and testability. Also issues relating to the minimising of EMI at the board and system level and the need to meet EMC requirements will be addressed.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Be aware of the basics of PCB design and testing

2.

Be aware of PCB Design for manufacturability and testability

3.

Design PCB for minimum EMI and to meet EMC requirements

4.

Be aware of the issues which arise when different electronic modules are connected together in a system

5.

Design and Packaging of Electronics products to minimise EMI and meet EMC requirements

6.

EMC testing processes

7.

Know the difference between prototype testing, fault diagnosis testing and production testing.

8.

Be aware of testing procedures and preparation of  test plans

Indicative Syllabus

Printed Circuit Board Design

PCB Design, design for manufacturing and testability, PCB Production and assembly processes.

Electromagnetic Compatibility and testing

Radiated and conducted Emissions, Radiated and Conducted Immunity, Surge, voltage dip, ESD and Fast transient burst testing.

PCB Testing

Preparation of Test plans, design of test jigs.

 

Indicative Practicals/Projects

Design and test number of printed circuit boards

Produce boards with through hole technology as well as surface mounted.

Laboratory experiments on Transmission lines

Laboratory assignments around Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing

Use of Picosoft software for testing and recording tests

Use of Labview for automation and recording of test results
