Description

This module exposes students to the challenges and issues which arise when using tourism as a development strategy for local communities. Students examine how tourism supports the development of local communities through the thoughtful integration of enterprise support for tourism projects, tourism planning and community empowerment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Examine the concept of Community Tourism Development, identifying common terms and themes. 

2.

Comprehend the underlying influence of the issue of sustainability in the development of community tourism enterprises.

3.

Identify the range and role of agencies /organisations providing support for Community Tourism Development.  

4.

Discuss the contribution of key tourism theories, underpinning community development through tourism. 

5.

Appreciate the utilisation and application of strategic management/tourism planning to community tourism development.

6.

Evaluate the mechanisms and tools used to build community capacity for tourism development, specifically in peripheral regions.

Module Assessment Strategies

Students are assigned a journal paper / reading on a community tourism topic, and are required to read, review & analyse the article, illustrating the objectives, key themes / issues, contribution, and overall evaluation of paper.

Students are allocated an agency or organisation involved in supporting the development of community tourism in Ireland and are asked to research the organisational objectives, role, structure, funding, achievements to date and future plans.

Comprehend community tourism development as a 'construct' and examine the common terms and themes associated with its development.

Describe the characteristics and economic /socio-cultural benefits of community tourism development.

Discuss the significance of leadership in the context of community tourism development

Tourism Theories and Community Tourism Development  

Discuss the application of tourism theories in terms of their contribution to understanding community development through tourism. 

Examine and critique key tourism theories, using case study material, detailing recent theoretical developments and reflections.

Consider Beeton's (2006) combining of theoretical models to develop a greater understanding of the destination community, from the tourists' and host community's perspective   

Examine Murphy's (1985) contribution in attempting to present community tourism in a theoretical context by developing an ecological model of community tourism planning.

Application of Strategic Planning to Community Tourism

Examine the recent use and application of strategic planning and management to community tourism projects.

Recognise the effective use of 'strategic tools' such as the triple bottom line approach, benchmarks and indicators in community tourism development.

Community influence in formulating tourism policy & tourism planning / development.

Collaborative approaches of community, public, private sector in tourism planning and implementation. 

Building Community Capacity for Tourism Development

Examine Moscardo's (2005) contribution that the most basic barrier to effective tourism development is lack of knowledge.

Comprehend how networks and partnerships help to overcome such barriers and support community tourism development. 

Recognise the role of entrepreneurship in developing community projects and rural tourism development.

Appreciate the emerging role of women in developing tourism projects in peripheral communities.
