Description

The learner will gain an understanding of how to use basic surveying equipment to carry out surveys. The learner will also know how to produce a site survey drawing using drafting software.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

apply fundamental surveying calculations.

read maps and plans and understand national grid.

3.

Operate a level to carry out levelling surveys and set out for construction purposes.

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous Assessment:

10% Practical Evaluation.

30% Assignments/Problems - series of problems and assignments.

60% Project - Survey a site and produce a site survey plan using drafting software.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Surveying fundamentals.
  2. Maps and plans.
  3. Tape work: Using OS maps and drafting software to produce site surveys. Checking dimensions of features on site against maps, measuring and adding existing features on site to maps in drafting software. Producing scaled two dimensional site plans.
  4. Levelling:  Principle of levelling. Setting up, taking and booking staff readings.  Fly and series levelling. Rise and fall and height of collimation methods of reducing levels. Setting out levels. Contouring. Two peg test.
