Description

This subject aims to provide a basic understanding of sport and recreation in the context of local, national and international developments.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

The student will be able to define, classify and describe the different forms of sport, recreation and leisure activity

2.

The student will be able to explain the structure and make up of the Irish sport and recreation industry

3.

The student will be able to recognise and discuss the role of the Irish government and associated Statutory Agencies in the development of national sport and recreation policy and strategies

4.

The student will be able to describe and explain the role of the principle associations and professional agencies involved in the development and delivery of sport and recreation programmes in Ireland at national and local level

5.

The student will be able to recognise the contemporary issues influencing sport and recreation today

6.

The student will appreciate the role of research in the Irish sport and recreation sector

Repeat Assessments

Students must achieve an overall grade of 40% to pass module. If a student has failed overall, they will be required to repeat the specific elements that they have failed. (i.e. Final exam and/or the specific piece of continuous assessment failed)

 

Indicative Syllabus

1.      Defining and Categorising Sport, Recreation and Leisure             5%

•·        Define the concepts and give examples of the following: Sport (sport for all, competitive, elite); Recreation (active and passive); Leisure (as a concept, organized leisure) (outcome 1)

•·        Describe the categorization of sporting activity (Athletics; Games and Gymnastics Families) (outcome 1)

2.         Government and Sport in Ireland                                                                 10%

•·        Describe the organization and governance of sport in Ireland (outcome 2/3)

•·        Outline the involvement of the different government departments in funding sport in Ireland(outcome 2/3)

•·        Describe the role and funding programmes of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (outcome 2/3)

3.         The Irish Sports Council                                                                                40%

•·        Describe the role of the Irish Sports Council as a statutory agency in the development and delivery of sport in Ireland. (outcome 3)

•·        Explain the programmes of the Irish Sports Council in the delivery of its strategy (participation, performance, excellence) (outcome 3)

•·        Explain the relationship and support which the Irish Sports Council gives to its strategic partners (i.e. CI, IIS, NGB's, LSP's, IOC etc.) in the delivery of sport in Ireland(outcome 3/4)

•·        Explain the Irish Sports Council's Anti-Doping programme(outcome 3)

4.         Coaching Ireland/Irish Institute of Sport/ Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management/ Local Sports Partnerships/ Olympic Council of Ireland                                                                          10%

•·        Describe the role and programmes of the following: CI; IIS; Ireland Active; LSP's; OCI (outcome 4)

 6.         Contemporary Issues influencing Sport and Recreation                             20%

•·        Funding & economic issues ; Sociological issues in sport and recreation

•·        Political issues in sport and recreation; Technological issues in sport and recreation

•·        Development of Fitness Industry; Target groups in sport (children, women, people with a disability, minority groups (outcome 5)

7.         Role and publication of Research in Irish Sport and Recreation Sector 5%

•·        Explain role of research in the ongoing development of Irish sports policy

•·        Describe key socio economic and participation findings from ISC/ESRI research (outcome 7)
