Description

The module is designed to further the learner's knowledge of the subject of statistics as applied to topics in occupational safety and health. The module will cover descriptive statistics and data presentation before moving on to cover some basic inferential statistics. Methods of statistical testing which have particular relevance to occupational health and safety will also be dealt with. Finally, the module will include reviewing the use of databases to track OSH related items.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate their knowledge of core statistics skills such as data presentation and use of summary statistics.

2.

Apply their knowledge of descriptive statistics to summarise a datatset in an appropriate and meaningful way.

3.

Use inferential statistics to make robust judgements about a population of interest by analysis of sample data from the population.

4.

Implement a database for tracking of matters relating to occupational safety and health.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This includes lectures, computer practicals, and will be augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments).

Module Assessment Strategies

The module will be assessed using a combination of continuous assessment and an end of year written exam. A portion of the continuous assessment will include Moodle quizzes which will be completed every two weeks throughout the semester. Another portion of the continuous assessment involves practical assessments which test the students' ability to apply statistical analysis, using software, to a particular OSH scenario.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat final exam and/or CA.

Indicative Syllabus

Demonstrate their knowledge of core statistics skills such as data presentation and use of summary statistics.

  • Graphical representation and interpretation of data using statistical software: bar charts, trend charts, box plots.
  • Working with statistical distributions.

Apply their knowledge of descriptive statistics to summarise a dataset in an appropriate and meaningful way.

  • Generating summary statistics be calculator and statistical software: mean, median, mode, standard deviation, variance, range.
  • Representing summary statistics graphically using statistical software: bar chart with error bars, box plot.

Use inferential statistics to make robust judgements about a population of interest by analysis of sample data from the population.

  • Sampling schemes and random sampling
  • Use of a random number generator for sample selection.
  • Generation of confidence intervals, standard error.
  • t-test, F-test, using statistical software.

Implement a database for tracking of matters relating to occupational safety and health.

  • Data management
  • Entering data into a statistical software package.
  • Sorting, filtering scrubbing and formatting data using statistical software.
  • Implementing data action rules.
  • Pivot tables and charts.
  • Graphical display of database data.

Applied Statistics in Occupational Safety and Health, second edition, provides occupational safety and health professionals with an introductory guide to basic statistics and data analysis. This book is written in an easy-to-understand format with step-by-step procedures to analyze data using a variety of statistical techniques. In this second edition new and updated examples are provided as well as additional statistical tests. Topics in this book include statistical procedures for analyzing means, descriptive statistical methods, correlations, regression, and non-parametric statistical tests. At the end of each chapter, the author has provided sample problems and solutions.
