Description

This module will develop students skills to engage with management on matters related to safety. The rationale for effective safety management will be explored with reference to the modern workplace.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Identify how the role of the safety professional can influence the success of a business

2.

Analyse and interpret data relevant to the OSH professional.

3.

Explore communication and how best to identify the best methods of communication in a variety of situations

4.

Explain the role and benefits of Risk Management in the achievement of business excellence and within the wider socio-economic context.

5.

Develop and communicate an OSH business case proposal in relation to an OSH issue.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered part-time and will include a blend of learning activities e.g. on-line lectures (via Adobe Connect), augmented by independent learning and directed learning. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources (e.g. powerpoint presentations, recordings of online lectures and supplementary reading material) and a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

This approach is expected to address various student learning needs. The online delivery will be blended with workshops to bring the learners together to facilitate group learning.

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment

Formative assessment will be delivered through class discussions and individual feedback.  Students will be assessed through a variety of means e.g (but not limited to). quizzes, reports and mind maps.  MCQ at the end of the module will cover all content delivered through the module.

Indicative Syllabus

 1  Identify how the role of the safety professional can influence the success of a business

Look at different safety professionals and explore their functions and relationships within a business

Identify key factors (internal and external) that contribute to a successful business venture

2  Analyse and interpret data relevant to the OSH professional.

Take data and analyse it to draw conclusions for future predictions or analysis of past performance

Discuss Key Performance Indicators (KPI)

Develop graphical representation of data to aid understanding and communicate data results

3  Explore communication and how best to identify the best methods of communication in a variety of situations

Identify the different methods of communication available to the safety officer

Discuss how best to determine the communication method based on situation, availability, audience and confidence

Explain the benefits of effective communication to the safety officer with special reference in communication in a business setting 

Explore the language of business

4  Explain the role and benefits of Risk Management in the achievement of business excellence and within the wider socio-economic context.

Discuss the benefits of effective risk management 

Identify how a business can have an impact on the wider community and indeed how effective risk management can make this a positive interaction
