Description

This module aims at providing an understanding of how and why buildings must be modernised and maintained, the environmental impact of construction and the installation and requirements of building services

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Assess the technologies and techniques required for upgrading and maintaining a range of buildings and their services

2.

Appreciate the need for building modernisation

3.

Carry out a building survey, report and make recommendations relating to defects and improvements

4.

Recognise the need for systems and materials to reduce the environmental impact of construction work

5.

Identify the functional requirements, installation methods and selection of building services

1. Refurbishment – Building upgrades and retrofitting

2. Maintenance – Management and types

3. Building Surveys – Methods, recording of information and report writing

4. Building Defects – types, cause and remedies

5. Demolition / Deconstruction – decision to demolish, methods and waste management

6. Sustainable Construction – Design, development and environmental impact

7. Building Services – Below ground drainage, Utilities, Water, Mechanical, Electrical installations

8. Building operation Systems – BEMS

9. Alternative and Renewable Energy Systems
