The module aims at introducing the student to multi storey industrial and commercial buildings and identifying project specific solutions

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Recognise the affect different sources and types of loadings have on the building elements


Liaison with design team members to develop project specific construction solutions


Show an understanding of the design and construction methods relating to multi – storey buildings


Identify the different materials and systems used to provide fire protection in multi storey buildings


Differentiate between construction details in relation to the functional requirements of industrial, commercial and high rise residential buildings

3. Frames – Functions and selection criteria, forms and materials

4. Comparative studies relating to steel, concrete and timber multi-storey frames

5. Fire engineering – requirements and methods

6. Cladding and curtain walling - functional requirements, types and materials

7. Upper floors – multi storey buildings, options and methods of construction

8. Fit out and second fix – internal division of space, raised access floors and suspended ceilings

9. Roofs – Commercial and Industrial, thermal and moisture protection
