The student will be able to apply the basic tools and techniques of reliability engineering and appreciate the importance of risk management.

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

Analyse the reliability of a design or a process using FMEA and FTA

Communicate the importance of risk management in different environments

### Indicative Syllabus

1. Introduction to reliability: the history of reliability and safety technology. Understanding terms and jargon.
2. Reliability mathematics: probability distributions - discrete and continuous. Point processes and trend analysis. Laplace Test
3. Probability plotting: ranking data. Using Weibull probability plotting paper for uncensored, censored and failure -free distributions.
4. Reliability prediction and Modelling: systems reliability models- series, parallel, m-out-of-n redundancy, standby redundancy.
5. Failure Analysis: failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), fault tree analysis (FTA). Pareto analysis, repairable systems, non-parametric methods
6. Risk Management: Harm and risk. Probability  of Risk
7. Risk Management Standards - ISO 31000:2009. Risk management in different sectors eg medical device industry. Safety management principles.
