Description

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to various systems of the human body and provide a foundation for more specific studies in Exercise Physiology, Human Nutrition and Physical Activity modules.  The module places particular emphasis on specialised knowledge and theoretical concepts in physiological systems including  the Nervous system, Sense Organs, Excretory, Endocrine, and Reproductive systems . Skills sets in basic laboratory procedures and human health testing relating to the aforementioned physiological systems are developed in parallel.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate knowledge and relate concepts of various human physiological systems to health; namely nervous, excretory, endocrine, reproductive and sensory systems.

2.

Demonstrate a range of laboratory skills in physiological laboratory experimentation.

3.

Research, devise and conduct physiological experiments to self defined problems relevant to systems covered

4.

Work individually or as part of a team to record and present physiological data in a variety of formats

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full time.  This will include lectures and laboratory practicals augmented by independent learning and directed external reading.  During the delivery of this module self learning is encouraged through the use of online resources, self directed topical worksheets and formative assessments.  This approach is expected to address student learning needs.  Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes and uploading assignments).  Students will conduct an enquiry based learning project to develop teamwork skills and competencies.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

They will have their knowledge tracked and assessed via online quizzes (3-5 in total) with immediate feedback at the end of each one/two physiological systems.  Formative assessments (e.g. Kahoots) are provided to students to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning.

They will have their practical skills assessed through a number of assignments e.g. laboratory report(s), practical skills exam, enquiry based learning group project.  These assignments will demonstrate the students ability to measure, interpret and/or critically evaluate health related aspects of the physiological systems covered in this module.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will cover the general organisation of the Endocrine, Nervous, Reproductive, Sensory and Excretory Systems covering relevant structures and functions of each system.  It will cover the principle mechanisms related to the working of the human body and link each system to key health topics. Practicals will be completed that support and illustrate various concepts of the physiological systems.

Overview Instructors consistently ask for a Human Biology textbook that helps students understand the main themes of biology through the lens of the human body. Maders Human Biology, 15th Edition accomplishes the goal of improving scientific literacy, while establishing a foundation of knowledge inhuman biology and physiology. The text integrates a tested, traditional learning system with modern digital and pedagogical approaches designed to stimulate and engage todays student. Dr. Michael Windelspecht represents the new generation of digital authors. Through the integration of an array of multimedia resources,Michael has committed to delivering the tried-and-true content of the Mader series to the new generation of digital learners. A veteran of the online, hybrid, and traditional teaching environments, Michael is well-versed in the challenges facing the modern student and educator.

For one-semester Anatomy & Physiology courses. Focus on the essential what, how, & why of human anatomy & physiology With the 12th Edition of Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, science educator Suzanne Keller joins bestselling author Elaine Marieb in helping learners focus on the essential What, How, & Why of A&P, without getting sidetracked in unnecessary details. Thoroughly updated with dozens of new figures, photos, and current information on medical recommendations and terminology, the 12th Edition continues to set the standard for brief, accessible one-semester A&P texts. The authors' hallmark clear and friendly writing style has been strengthened with familiar analogies and abundant mnemonic cues that help students learn and remember concepts. Continuing to offer just the right balance of anatomy, physiology, and clinical coverage, engaging new chapter previews help learners hone in on what structures and functions they are studying, how they function, and why they are important to learn. Mastering(tm) A&P not included. Students, if Mastering A&P is a recommended/mandatory component of the course, please ask your instructor for the correct ISBN and course ID. Mastering A&P should only be purchased when required by an instructor. Instructors, contact your Pearson rep for more information. Mastering A&P is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to engage students and improve results. Instructors ensure that students arrive ready to learn by assigning educationally effective content before class, and encourage critical thinking and retention with in-class resources such as Learning Catalytics(tm). Students can further master concepts after class through assignments that provide hints and answer-specific feedback. With a wide range of activities available, students can actively learn, understand, and retain even the most difficult concepts.
