Description

Capstone Project /Dissertation

The goal is to put one’s theoretical knowledge and research knowledge to practical test by carrying out an independent piece of research, (albeit guided with a supervisor) to produce a piece of research that makes a significant contribution to solving a problem and expanding the knowledge base in the specific discipline.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Apply your theoretical and methodological understanding and skills into devising researchable ideas and specific research questions or hypotheses.

2.

Conduct a focused review of the relevant literature.

3.

Develop a realistic research design with specific research strategies.

4.

Articulate concisely findings and conclusions in a written document which is informed by academic writing standards and justify conclusions by reference to evidence gathered and presented.

5.

Demonstrate time, information and project management skills.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be allocated a supervisor for the Project. Learners will undertake guided independent study. 

Module Assessment Strategies

The capstone project requires students to undertake a piece of independent, guided research within a specified field or sub-field of business and/or insurance. The final document should be at least 10,000 words. Topics will normally be related to the students workplace.

Repeat Assessments

This module is reassessed solely on the basis of re-submitted coursework. There is no repeat written examination.

Indicative Syllabus

The module requires students to undertake a piece of independent closely guided research. It allows students to apply the techniques taught in specialist subjects to an academic investigation of a topic of their choosing. The output of this module will be a dissertation of at least 10,000 words.

Literature Review

  • Discuss the writing of a Literature review & Bibliography
  • Adequately fitting in with the proposed objective


Research Instruments

  • Examine various appropriate research methods
  • Analyse the techniques used in developing a Methodology


Results- Discussion and Analysis

  • Interpretation and the benefit of it
  • Analyse the techniques used in developing a Methodology
  • How the findings can be linked to the primary problem


Conclusions

  • Develop Recommendations and findings that could be derived from the research


Style, Content, Presentation and Formatting

  • Demonstrate a professional level of Content, Style & Presentation within overall academic writing
  • Overall appropriate presentation of the document
