In the final year project students implement an embedded system, which uses an 8-bit microcontroller. A printed circuit board is designed and manufactured. It is then populated and tested. Code is written for the microcontroller in assembly or C. This is debugged, simulated and / or emulated using an appropiate development system. All work is documented on a weekly basis and a final project report is submitted. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Outline a project proposal


Design the project and source components


Plan and demonstrate an appreciation of the need for project reporting


Demonstrate an appreciation of interfacing.


Produce a detailed flow chart of project operation


Design a test schedule


Implement a test plan


Assemble components on PCB and carry out electrical tests as per test plan


Write, compile, debug, simulate and emulate project code using the Embedded Systems Development Tools Provided.


Produce a comprehensive project report


Answer technical questions related to the project.

Indicative Syllabus

A sample progression of a project may achieve most or all of the following milestones/deliverables.


  • The learner, in consultation with his/her supervisor will explore and conclude on a clear statement of the goal(s) for the embedded system project, which uses an 8-bit microcontroller.
    • The output of this process will be a 1 page document.  It will include:
      • A one paragraph Objective stating the clear goal(s) for the project.
      • An Abstract section explaining clearly and in some detail what the finished product will be able to do or how it will be used.
      • The document should contain a date, revision number, the learner's name and title of the project.
      • This will be signed off and stored online. 


  • Learners will engage in a design process which may include:
    • Producing a revison marked, high level block diagram of the project hardware.
    • Producing a revison marked, flowchart of the software element of the project.
    • Producing a revison marked, hardware circuit/board schematic on an approved design tool.
    • Designing a PCB layout.
    • Research into, sourcing and ordering of required physical components in a timely manner.
    • Logging their progress each week in an online log in a given format and submitting a short weekly status report to the supervisors. 

Implementation and Testing

  • Learners will engage on an implementation and testing phase which may include:
    • Code simulation on an approved simulator
    • Programming in C or Assembly language
    • Testing of code (as must as possible) on simulator.
    • Software Testing Plan and Results
    • Building of hardware
    • Verification of same.
    • Emulation of program on processor target board/hardware
    • Integration of hardware/software to working, powered up unit.  

Release Phase

  • The final phase will be the release phase which may include
    • Demonstration of the working project, with the processor programmed with software and performing project goal.
    • Written Report to given layout guidelines
    • Interview
