Description

The module develops initial student knowledge, awareness, skills and competencies in a broad range of areas of professional practice, including: professional ethics, effective learning, professional communication, career planning and development, health and safety, universal design, product safety, sustainability, and working in a team environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Reflect critically on learning experiences and career planning and development, identifying more and less effective learning approaches.

2.

Apply Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics to any given situation whilst understanding the underlying ethical principles.

3.

Identify and summarise aspects of Irish and EU legislation affecting engineering practice, including personnel health and safety, universal design, and product safety.

4.

Identify the role and interaction between engineering products and systems and environmental impacts, especially energy use and climate change.

5.

Discuss non-engineering factors that may determine the success or otherwise of new technologies/systems/products, and the non-engineering factors that may be important in product design and development.

6.

Write technical reports and demonstrate appropriate academic and professional standards of written communication.

7.

Work effectively and professionally in a team environment.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures and practical sessions will provide guidance for the team project and learning journals, feedback for the team project, and additional information on writing skills, ethics, universal design, health & safety, sustainability, engineering standards, as well as basic relevant information on psychology and economics.

Module Assessment Strategies

This modules is ??% continuous assessment and ??% final examination at the end of the semester. The continuous assessment is by both group and individual project work. 

The sizing the slice method of group assessment (Clelford & Hopkins, 2014) will be used to allocate marks to the individual members of the project group. A copy of this method of allocating marks will be given to the students at the start of the module.

Repeat Assessments

The learners must pass both the continuous assessment and final examination.

Where a learner or group of learners fail the project element of the module they will be required to resubmit the project again for assessment.

Learners who fail the end of module terminal examination will have the opportunity to resit the examination during the repeat examination session.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Learning journal: Briefings and feedback for the reflections on the learning experience. Provided online.
  2. Career development:  Developmental approach to career choices. Informed about resources on careers information and encouraged in a self help approach. Develop ability to apply for an appropriate summer internship, including the preparation of a professional CV.
  3. Team based engineering research project: Complete a team based engineering research report. Selecting and agreeing some engineering problem, technology, product or service of interest to the team. Research topic, with careful attention to critical evaluation and comparison of different sources. Communicated in a professional engineering research report, demonstrating appropriate academic and professional standards of written communication, including spelling, grammar, structure, citation and presentation.
  4. Guest seminar sessions: Seminar sessions with invited guest speakers addressing core modules topics: health and safety, volunteerism, equality, universal design, and product safety, sustainability, energy, climate change, ethical practice, and the organisaton and regulation of the engineering profession.
  5. Provide guidance for the team project and learning journals, feedback for the team project, and additional information on writing skills, ethics, universal design, health & safety, sustainability, engineering standards, as well as basic relevant information on psychology and economics
