Description

This subject aims to examine and critically assess a number of key concepts and issues associated with behaviour in organisations. The student will develop knowledge about individual behaviour in the workplace, team processes and how organisational processes impact upon organisational effectiveness.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Critically analyse ways in which motivation theories can be used to design work-based practices aimed at improving work performance

2.

Assess the emerging trends and challenges that need to be addressed by organisations

3.

Critically analyse the dynamics of teamwork in an organisational setting

4.

Debate the importance of organisational culture and investigate the main approaches for describing organisational culture

5.

Explain the nature and causes of conflict in the workplace and evaluate ways to manage conflict

6.

Evaluate different techniques for managing change in the workplace

Motivation in Organisations

Need based perspectives on motivation, process based perspectives on motivation, job design and alternative work arrangements

Emerging Trends in Organisations

Managing workforce diversity, technology and business communication, improving ethical behaviour, helping employees balance work/life conflicts

Teamwork

Nature of teams, types of organisational teams, team effectiveness model, guidelines for developing teams

Organisational Culture

Nature of organisational culture, factors determining the formation and maintenance of culture, functional and dysfunctional effects of culture, transmitting organisational culture

Organisational Conflict

Nature of conflict, perspectives on conflict in organisations, sources of conflict, conflict handling and resolution

Organisational Change and Development

Forces for change, resistance to change, methods of reducing resistance to change, Lewins Model, organisational development, stress and the change process
