Description

This module (the first of two) introduces students to the key theories, concepts and ideas underpinning individual behaviour in organisations and how this knowledge may be applied in organisational settings. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe various personality dimensions that are responsible for individual differences in the workplace.

2.

Explain perception and perceptual factors and the role perception plays in organisational settings.

3.

Examine motivation theory and explore the application of motivation theory in the workplace.

4.

Discuss the role of attitudes and job satisfaction in modern workplaces.

5.

Describe  different leadership styles in organisations.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Effective teaching and learning strategies will evolve as the module is delivered  However, it is expected that lectures (live, virtual, and/or recorded), practical workshops, videos,  group work, problem-based learning and peer review will be core to this module. 

Module Assessment Strategies

100% continuous assessment which may be any of the following: practical skills assessment (live/recorded/virtual), group project, presentation (recorded/live or virtual), role play, open-book exam or essay, multiple choice quiz, case study.  

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessments will be developed to align with failed components.

  • What is motivation,
  • Motivation process,
  • Theories of motivation,
  • How motivation theory is applied in organisations.

LO 1,5.  Attitudes and Job Satisfaction:

  • What are attitudes,
  • The role of attitudes in job satisfaction,
  • Understanding job satisfaction,
  • Job satisfaction measures,
  • Improving job satisfaction.

LO 1,6.  Leadership:

  • What is leadership,
  • Difference between leadership and management,
  • Theories of leadership,
  • How effective leaders can be developed,
  • The role of emotions in leadership.
