Description

This module is intended to enable students to engage in an independent research project where they utilise the skills and competencies that they have acquired during their degree programme to research an area in relation to nutrition, food and health. Students will be given a fundamental insight into research methods and gain experience in the practical application of these skills

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate the ability to critically review the literature in the area of the research topic

2.

Plan and implement methodologies to collect, collate and analyse relevant data where appropriate

3.

Interpret findings, discuss results with reference to the literature and identify key recommendations as a result of the research conducted

4.

Source, interpret, critically review and apply appropriate and referenced literature from area of investigation

5.

Present and communicate the research project in a variety of forms including oral and written

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning of their specific research topic under the direction and guidance of their project supervisor.

Module Assessment Strategies

This assessment strategy for this module is designed to focus students on the production of a research paper (including a critical review) and a oral presentation of their research findings.

The project is assessed in a number of ways:

Continuous assessment ‑ this is carried out by the project supervisor and relates to the manner in which the student plans, organises and manages their own time and data collection.

Research Paper ‑ the written report is assessed by the project supervisor and a second academic. This assessment evaluates the students ability to accurately record, interpret, evaluate and draw conclusions from their findings. This also gives the assessors an insight into the students understanding of the research area and the students ability to source literature, evaluate and interpret this literature and to place their own findings in context.

Presentation ‑ this presentation, carried out as part of an undergraduate nutrition conference, allows the student to demonstrate their ability to communicate their research findings in both presentation and oral form.

Viva - Students will undergo a short viva with the project supervisor and a second academic allowing the student to further demonstrate their knowledge of the research area.
