The dissertation aims to facilitate the student in drawing together one's theoretical and research knowledge to practical test by carrying out independent study (albeit guided with supervisor) to produce an original piece of research and make a convincing contribution to solving problem and expanding the knowledge base in the field of study.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Apply your theoretical and methodological understanding and skills into devising researchable ideas and specific research questions or hypotheses, based on the proposal which was previously outlined.


Conduct a focused review of the relevant literature.


Demonstrate originality in the application of knwoledge and a practical underestanding of what can be inferred from the data.


Develop analytical and interpreetative skills by drawing conclusions from the research.


Pressent research in the form of a dissertation in which the research findings are communicated clearly, concisely and effectively.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will work individually with their assigned dissertation supervisor and are expected to complete detailed research culminating in a written dissertation.

Module Assessment Strategies

A course research handbook will guide the research and students are allocated a supervisor after the first semester.

Students will work individually and are expected to complete a detailed research dissertation culminating in a written dissertation. Two copies of the dissertation to be sent by registered post addressed to your Supervisor, Department of Business & Humanities, Institute of Technology, Sligo.
