Description

This subject aims to develop student knowledge of and skill in the use of commonly used operations management planning/control and improvement techniques as well as improving their awareness of the challenges for operations managers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Apply the basic planning techniques needed to translate demand into operational activity.

2.

Describe and evaluate the methods used by organisations in all sectors to procure, handle and store the materials that they need.

3.

Measure the capability of a process and describe and evaluate techniques used to improve operational performance

4.

Describe the unique features of Projects and be capable of applying project planning and control techniques

5.

Describe and evaluate the challenges faced by operations managers at present and in the future.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Readings, lectures and class discussion to achieve an understanding of the concepts and techniques

Case studies to demonstrate the relevance ot the techniques

Class exercised to practice the application of techniques

Research project to discover extent of practice of the concepts and techniques

 

Module Assessment Strategies

MC Quizzes to ensourage reading on the topics and to assess understanding of the concepts

Group research project to develop teamwork and to improve student understanding of the application of the concepts and techniques in practice.

Final written exam to get an overall assessment of student understanding of concepts and to give them an opportunity to demonstrate competence in the applicion of the techniques. 

Repeat Assessments

Repeat written examination plus an individual project for students who have not achieved a pass mark in continuous assessment
