MCRO07003 2013 Applied and Environmental Microbiology
Students will learn the microbiological methods used to detect and enumerate faecal indicator bacteria, and will learn about water-borne bacterial, protozoan and viral pathogens and their dispersion in the environment, what diseases they cause. Students will learn how to analyse shellfish and compost/soil/sludge for microbial contamination. Students will learn about the role microorganisms play in activated sludge and will be able to recognise their occurance in wastewater treatment.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Will learn a variety of Laboratory methods for microbiological analysis: water, shellfish and Soil/compost analysis
will know the characteristics of faecal Indicator bacteria
will know the nature of water borne microbial pathogens, including sources, pathways and impact
will learn and show understanding of the factors affecting the fate of water borne pathogens
will know the microbiology of activated sludge
Module Assessment Strategies
The Laboratory component will be assessed by maintaining a laboratory Note Book, recording all activites from each lab session as contempraneous notes. These notes will be assessed periodically and marks accumulated over the semester. Reports on Laboratory activities will be uploaded electronically via Moodle.
A laboratory assessment of good laboratory microbiological technique will be carried out periodically to ensure skills acquired.
Short Question test on laboratory methods
Feedback on performance will be ongoing
Short Questions exams on the theory component during the semester are intended to monitor progress and spread the assessment load leading to a Final theory exam to complete theory assessment.
Indicative Syllabus
Will know the characteristics of Faecal Indicator Bacteria
Fate of microbial pathogens in the environment:
will know the nature of water-borne microbial pathogens, including sources, pathways and impact,
survival and retention in soils/subsurface, microbial source tracking
Microbiology of Activated Sludge, Population succession, removal of BOD, Carbonaceous and Nitrogenous, denitrification.
Will be able to carry out complete bacteriological analysis of water samples for Faecal Indicator Bacteria
and indicators recreational water contamination.
Bacteriological Analysis of Shellfish
will learn how to analyse compost, sludge, soil for microbial contaminants
Will be able to carry out microscopic examination of activated sludge.
