This module will train candidates on how to effectively use and operate an injection moulding machine as well as gain an understanding of how the settings of the injection moulding machine effects material quality.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Identify relevant injection moulding health and safety considerations to include hazards assocuated with process equipment and materials handling


Explain key injection moulding cycle parameters including: times, speeds, pressures, temperatures, positions and strokes for each stage of the moulding cycle


Describe the principles of cold runner and hot runner mould designs and mould and part design rules


Analyse general moulding part defects and propose/demonstrate appropriate corrective action to correct the faults


Explain key terms and definitions associated with mould opening, closing, clamping and ejector movements


Perform mould installs and removals to prepare moulds for production 


Set up the injection unit of a moulding machine for production from a blank programme


Demonstrate how to measure shot to shot variation on a moulding process and analyse the process to identify causes of process variation

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Students will be involved in hands on training on the main concepts of injection moulding machines. Practical sessions reinforced with theoretical material will be adopted to allow the students to develop the basic knowledge and skills required in this area. A blended learning approach is adopted allowing the students to access the supporting material online, providing the opportunity to further develop their knowledge in a fllexible manner.

Module Assessment Strategies

The students will be assessed on their understanding of the setting up, operation and troubleshooting of injection moulding machines during their training. A written exam will then assess their theoretical knowledge of the main concepts delivered over the course of the module. All assessment strategies are constructively aligned with the learning/teaching strategies and the module learning outcomes.

Repeat Assessments

Students would be required to sit a repeat exam paper in August as well as repeat lab sessions
