**Description**

In this module, the fundamentals of mathematics required for a Science qualification are covered. All effort in this semester is focused on the student's need to understand and practice basic mathematical processes and their application to real life and science. Students are supported in their efforts by a comprehensive VLE site containing videos, notes and quizzes relevant to each topic. There are supervised tutorials twice a week to help solve the problems encountered in the module.

### Learning Outcomes

*On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;*

Perform calculations involving basic operations without a calculator.

**2.**

Use powers and scientific notation to express values and evaluate expressions.

**3.**

Perform unit conversions and simple pharmaceutical calculations

**4.**

Manipulate and solve mathematical expressions correctly.

**5.**

Plot and analyse linear, quadratic and simultaneous equations.

### Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full time. This will include 2 live lectures per week supported by online VLE (Moodle) based notes, videos and associated quizzes.

These lectures are augmented by 2 x 1 hr "Maths practicals" where students can work on the online quizzes and written problems in an informal setting with one or more tutors present to provide assistance and feedback.

### Module Assessment Strategies

**This module is 65% Continuous Assessment and 35% Final exam**

There are essentially 2 parts to the course work - the online Moodle quizzes and the written journal.

**Moodle quizzes**

Students are required to achieve 100% in each online quiz. (Summative & formative) These quizzes form the basis of short CA tests every second week.(Summative).

Students have 1 hr a week supervised tutorial to help and provide feedback with Moodle quizzes. (Formative)

**Journal **

Students complete 10 written worksheets (approx. 1 per week) into their Journal. (Summative) While students sit their CA tests - they receive feedback (via online rubric) on their Journal work to date. (Formative)

Attendance at all Maths practicals is recorded and the Journal mark is multiplied by this value.
