This module aims to equip the student with a range of fundemental skills in Business Mathematics

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Demonstrate competence in numerical operations and algebraic manipulation

2.

Perform calculations in financial mathematics

3.

Organise data in tabular or graphical form

4.

Summarise and analyse statistical data

Indicative Syllabus

1.  Basic Mathematics

  • Perform arithmetic operations using fractions
  • Perform calculations using percentages and ratios
  • Apply the laws of indices to expressions involving indices
  • Apply the rules of precedence in evaluating expressions
  • Use an electronic calculator
  • Simplify mathematical expressions and transpose formulae
  • Solve linear, quadratic and cubic equations and know how to plot their graphs
  • Use exponential and logarithmic functions

2.  Financial Mathematics

  • Calculate simple and compound interest
  • Analyse investments using NPV and IRR
  • Calculate periodic debt/mortgage repayments
  • Make out an amortization schedule

3.  Data Presentation

  • Primary and secondary data
  • Tabulation of data
  • Use various methods of representing data in graphical form

4.  Data Summarisation

  • Calculate mean, median and mode
  • Calculate the range, interquartile range and standard deviation
