The subject aims to build on the years of previous language studies and to equip the student with the linguistic skills to communicate competently in Spanish and to develop the student's appreciation of, and sensitivity to social, cultural and economic issues relevant to Spanish. It also aims to develop the student's capacity to carry out personal research through the medium of Spanish. There will be a strong emphasis on the areas of language for business, translation studies and current affairs.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


perform confidently at Level B2 within the Common European Framework for Language Learning (Council of Europe Guidelines) and work towards Level C1.


understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussion in the field of specialisation.


interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity which makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party.


understand and appreciate various historical, political and social issues relevant to Spain and acquire an awareness of other countries across the globe where Spanish is spoken.


carry out personal research in Spanish using appropriate resources.


self-correct when speaking/writing in Spanish.

Indicative Syllabus

Listening: Can understand extended speech and lectures and follow even complex lines of argument. Can understand most TV news and current affairs programmes.

Reading: Can read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints. Can understand contemporary literary prose.

Spoken interaction: Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible.  Can take part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining views.

Spoken production: Can present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects relating to the student's field of interest. Can present a research project on political, economic and social issues relating to modern history.

Writing: Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.  Can write business letters/e mails.
