Description

This Module builds on skills acquired in Semesters 1-4.  The student should perform confidently at CEFR Level B1 and initiate progression towards CEFR Level B2.  Use of text-based and contemporary media will be selected to reflect the student's increasing linguistic competence and intercultural awareness.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

progress towards achieving competence at CEFR Level B2.

2.

Apply  more complex text on topics which relate to their field of specialisation.

3.

produce detailed texts on subjects relating to both their personal interests and their chosen area of study.

4.

express and defend a viewpoint on topics relating to their field of interest and current affairs and interact with some fluency and spontaneity with native speakers.

5.

design a project or make an oral presentation, video blog or podcast on a topic which relates to their field of specialisation.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Active learning is encouraged and participation is facilitated through small class size, roleplay and e-learning activities,via Moodle and the Virtual Learning Environment.  The use of authentic texts (abridged) with audio and audio-visual materials provides an introduction to modern Francophone media and underpins the contemporary focus of relevant topics.  Conversation with native speakers will be facilitated where possible.

Linguistic ability will be assessed in:

  • oral interviews
  • presentations
  • written tests
  • listening tests
  • projects

ONGOING = Every TWO To FOUR  weeks, assessment in these areas will occur through Oral/Aural/Written work and/or Role-play

These assessments will measure students at B2 level.

Indicative Syllabus

Listening: can understand the main ideas of more complex text which relates to issues of personal interest and their field of specialisation and relevant radio and TV programmes.

Reading:  can understand the main ideas of more complex text and articles.

Spoken Interaction:  can communicate with relative ease with native speakers on a range of topics and demonstrate increased fluency and spontaneity in such situations.

Spoken Production: can present clear descriptions on  the range of subjects relevant to this semester.

Writing:  can write text on the range of subjects relevant to this semester

Cultural Awareness: can demonstrate an understanding of French culture through project, presentation, blog or podcast
