Description

This Module will build on the language skills acquired in Semesters 1 and 2, and initiate progression towards CEFR Level A2.  The module will foster increasing independence in the use of the language in authentic everyday situations, with emphasis on gaining confidence in speaking and listening.  An awareness of German culture and society will develop in tandem with the student's developing language skills.  Contemporary media, written text, video clips and film will be used.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

 initiate progress towards CEFR Level A2.

2.

Identify and interpret correctly without assistance frequently used expressions related to immediate familiar situations: family, education, interests etc

3.

role-play using elementary language most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken

4.

compose with guidance simple written text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest

5.

demonstrate increased cultural insight into German societies by engaging with contemporary media platforms.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Encouragement of active participation during class.

Use of computer laboratory to access contemporary online learning platforms.

Reinforcement of language skills through self-study

Encouragement of conversation and social events with international students who are native speakers of the language. Tandem Learning Initiative with Hochschule Brandenburg, February 2021 is an example of this active collaboration. 

Encouragement and practice in developing confidence in reading skills appropriate to the level.

Indicative Syllabus

Listening: can begin to understand using authentic material sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance: family, education, social life etc.

Reading: can read simple texts using pre-learned vocabulary relating to everyday and simple professional interests, and to key cultural and social matters of relevance.

Spoken interaction: can begin to develop vocabulary for expression of simple and routine tasks where the information is simple, direct and related to daily life, work and study.

Spoken production: can produce phrases, sentences and simple conversations to communicate information on daily life, work, study and some interests.

Writing: can begin to compose with some independence simple connected text describing aspects of one background, environment and areas of immediate interest.

Culture and Society: can begin to select via contemporary media platforms cultural and social information and insights.
