Description

This Module introduces and reinforces essential language skills while also introducing the cultures of Francophone societies. Through a combination of text-based material and contemporary media, the student will consolidate key language skills at this level and develop cultural awareness.  On completion of the Semester, the student will move towards performing at Levels A1 - A2 within the CEFR Framework for Language Learning (Council of Europe Guidelines).  The Module is open to students who have some years of French but a highly motivated beginner should be able to attain the level required on completion of the module.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

perform at CEFR Level A1 within the common framework

2.

within a limited range use and modify sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

3.

introduce him/herself and ask and answer questions about personal details and make an attempt at communicating in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar  matters. Role-play prescribed topics

4.

describe using a range of vocabulary appropriate to the Level aspects of his/her background and immediate environment.

5.

complete a project or make a guided presentation in French selected from a range of cultural topics.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Active Learning is encouraged and participation is facilitated through small class size, roleplay and e-learning activities via Moodle and the Virtual Learning Environment.  The use of authentic texts (abridged) and use of subtitles with audio and audio-visual materials expands the student's experience of contemporary language learning media and underpins the contemporary focus of relevant topics. 

Module Assessment Strategies

Linguistic ability will be assessed in:

  • roleplays & oral presentations
  • oral interview
  • written tests
  • listening tests
  • project/presentation

ONGOING = Every TWO To FOUR  weeks, assessment in these areas will occur through Oral/Aural/Written work and/or Role-play

These assessments will measure student progress to A1 Level

Indicative Syllabus

Listening:

can understand phrases and the vocabulary related to areas of immediate personal relevance, e.g. personal and family information, shopping, local area, employment. Can catch the point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements. 
Reading:

can read short, simple texts, can find specific predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements, menus and timetables, can understand short simple personal letters/emails.


Spoken Interaction:

can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring  simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities, can handle short social exchanges.

Spoken Production: 

can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms  educational background and present or most recent job. 

Writing:

can write short simple notes and messages relating to matters in areas of immediate needs, can write a simple formal email.
