· This is an introductory module that is intended to help incoming students to understand and master those topics in mathematics that are necessary for successful engagement with Mathematics modules on the Institute’s Level programmes.

· To provide students with a body of vocabulary and a variety of terminology specific to the area of mathematics and statistics.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Interpret and use basic mathematical data


Understand basic symbols and terminology at an introductory level for mathematics and statistics


Be able to tackle mathematical problems using a calculator and with understanding for basic arithmetic, percentages, square roots, reciprocals and power.


Be able to express and interpret numbers in scientific notation and SI units.


Recognize different categories of graphs and charts; Plot points and draw graphs/charts, using suitable axes and scales.


Understand geometrical terminology for angles, triangles, quadrilaterals and circles and perform basic geometrical calculations.


Simple trigonometry,solve right angled triangle,trig ratios of sine cosine and tan, pythagoras's theorem
