The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a comprehensive appreciation of aspects of financial management including the implications of different capital structures for organisations and the importance of establishing policies for the efficient management of the individual elements of working capital.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Identify a company's capital structure and understand the implications of possible debt-equity mixes. Discuss the issues faced by a corporation when raising long-term finance and outline the various methods available.


Calculate the cost of equity, preference share capital and debt capital and using the market value propositions calculate the WACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital) for a business & appreciate the conditions where it is appropriate to use this


Understand the importance of dividends and discuss the factors to be considered by organisations in establishing a dividend policy


Identify the main elements of working capital in an organisation and the importance of developing policies to efficiently manage these elements (Inventory/Stock, Trade Receivables/ Debtors, Trade Payables/ Creditors, and Cash).


Understand the relationship between investment risk and return
