Description

This module introduces basic engineering principles, with a focus on the measurement of flows in the natural and built environment (hydraulics) and the principles behind the use of various methods for the conveyance of water and wastewater.   The module also introduces the use of maps and scaled drawings, and basic surveying techniques (levelling).

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Carry out a range of mathematical calculations to solve practical environmental engineering and environmental science problems

2.

Calculate flow rates, velocities and depths for a range of flow measurement devices used in water and wastewater treatment plants

3.

Use paper and electronic maps and drawings to identify and locate features and transfer a range of site data to maps and scaled drawings

4.

Carry out small land survey to record locations and levels using level, staff and tape.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time. This will include lectures, computer laboratory practicals and a small field survey (levelling) augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used as a repository of educational resources and as a means of assessment (e.g. quizzes, uploading assignments and journals).

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 50% Continuous Assessment and 50% Final Exam.

15% continuous assessment mark for survey of small area of college grounds using level, staff and tape.

35% continuous assessment mark for a number of short question assignments/MCQs.

Self-assessment tests and other forms of formative assessment are provided to students to check their own progress towards achieving the learning outcomes of the module and to motivate learning.

50% for final theory exam.

Repeat Assessments

Indicative Syllabus

Carry out a range of mathematical calculations to solve practical environmental engineering and environmental science problems

  • Mathematical Units and Equations - visualisation of units
  • Calculation of surface areas, volumes and retention times
  • Calculation of mass balances

Calculate flow rates, velocities and depths for a range of flow measurement devices used in water and wastewater treatment plants

  • Use basic equations incorporating flows, areas and velocities
  • Use the Manning Equation to estimate the capacity of a pipe or design a new pipe
  • Use modified Bernoulli Equation to calculate flows in pipes and flow measurement devices
  • Use basic equations for flows in Weirs and Flumes 

Use paper and electronic maps and drawings to identify and locate features and transfer a range of site data to maps and scaled drawings

  • How to purchase and download maps from Ordnance Survey Ireland website
  • Map scales and maps used for Planning Applications and Environmental Reports
  • Calculation of areas, contours and volume volume calculations 

Carry out small land survey to record locations and levels using level, staff and tape.

  • Setup and check a level and use with staff to collect elevation data from a site
  • Calculate the Reduced Levels from a survey data-book
  • Draw simple plans and elevations of a survey site
  • Extract basic quantities from drawings (e.g. volumes of excavation)
