Description

The aim of this module is to introduce students  to a wide range of Microbiological techniques in general use in a variety of Environmental settings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

To apply  a range of appropriate laboratory skills to perform routine analysis using microbiological techniques.

2.

Report on laboratory activities both electronically and in log book form

3.

Manipulate laboratory results , produce graphs and tables and answer short questions to demonstrate a detailed understanding of practicals preformed

4.

Explain the principles of enumeration methods used in Microbiological Analysis

5.

Describe the basic methods used to control microbial growth

Module Assessment Strategies

To assess the learning outcomes the students will be tested on the theory covered by short question tests and final theory examination.

The laboratory activites will be assessed on an ongoing basis by short question examinations, electronically uploaded laboratory reports and the periodic testing of practical laboratory skills acquired.

Environmental Monitoring for Microorganisms
Air Analysis for Bacteria and Yeasts and Moulds
Antibiotic Inhibition to the growth of microorganisms
Minimal Inhibitory Concentration Test for antimicrobials
Disinfection options and assessment of water and waste water
