Description

This module focuses on the materials, technology and procedures used to design and manage road pavements, with reference to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland TII (formerly National Roads Authority (NRA)) Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, and guidelines issued by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTS)

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Appraise the suitability of materials used in pavement construction and rehabilitation

2.

Formulate the fundamental engineering principles governing pavement structural design.

3.

Design appropriate combinations of materials and thicknesses for pavement and foundation construction

4.

Implement pavement management processes.

5.

Diagnose/interpret pavement distress and formulate appropriate maintenance and rehabilitation treatments

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module will be delivered using online lectures and workshops.

Module Assessment Strategies

Assessment will include continuous assessment exercises and final exam.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat assessment will involve a repeat of failed elements of the module - final examination and/or resubmission of failed continuous assessment items.
