This module provides the learner with theoretical and applied knowledge in the areas of air and noise pollution, renewable energy, sustainable development and practice, sustainable building and transport technology and low energy building systems, green building certification, and waste management systems.


Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Classify, identify and define the main sources and the scientific and engineering concepts relating to air and noise pollution and the control of their effects on the environment and public health.


Report on and interpret the relevant Irish and EU legislation, regulations, and framework directives pertaining to air and noise pollution and review the implementation of related programmes.


Determine the principles and interpret the application of technologies for the production of renewable and sustainable energy for building heating and energy production.


Interpret the principles, scientific concepts and procedures associated with sustainable development and practice, low and passive energy building technology, and green building certification. 


Classify, define and apply the scientific and engineering concepts relating to the generation, collection, recovery and treatment of solid waste materials from households, commercial and industrial sources.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The teaching and learning strategy is based on the use of both direct verbal and visual instruction (theory lectures, presentations and project briefings), and aural learning by giving instruction and guidance during project work, site visits, and assignments. 

Group interaction and enquiry-based learning is encouraged during assignments and project work using project update meetings to review progress and facilitate group discussion and collaboration.

The learning is also supplemented by independent learning with library, on-line and digital resources available for learners to research publications and knowledge for assignments, project work and to complement theory from lectures.

This strategy is accommodated by providing two hours per week of theory lectures and one hour per week of project work classes.


Module Assessment Strategies

The module is assessed using a blended mix of final semester examination (70%) and project study reports and site visit report work (30%).

Each learner must achieve a mark of at least 40% to pass the module and meet the learning outcomes.

Assessment of the examination and submitted project reports shall be summative in form. Formative assessment will also be used continuously during the project and report work to guide and provide feedback on progress to the learner.

Group work, where appropriate, is assessed by determining the individual contribution of each learner using group meetings, discussion and feedback. 


Repeat Assessments

Learners must achieve the pass mark of 40% by successfully repeating the final exam, project work or by re-submitting project reports, depending on the failed element.

  1. Air pollution sources, characteristics and environmental and health impacts.
  2. Atmospheric and meteorological effects on ambient air pollution dispersal.
  3. Air quality standards and regulation; EU CAFÉ Directive, etc.
  4. Environmental noise sources, effects and characteristics
  5. Noise pollution control and regulation; EU END Directive, etc
  6. Noise measurement, mapping and action plans
  7. Renewable and sustainable energy systems for small and large scale building heating and energy production.
  8. Sustainable building technologies and practices including requirements of the Building Regulations.
  9. Fundamentals of sustainable development and practice. Global warming and greenhouse gas mitigation.
  10. Green building and transport technologies, low and passive energy buildings, green building certification, including LEED and BREAM.

Indicative Practicals/Projects:

  1. Air Pollution Study – European/Irish Air Quality Review
  2. Noise Pollution Study – Noise mapping and action plan review
  3. Renewable energy case study/fieldwork and report.
  4. Site visit to renewable energy and/or sustainable engineering assignment.
  5. Green building assignment- group project
  6. Waste management collection system assignment - group project
  7. Site visit to waste management/recycling/treatment facility.
