Description

Professional Development & Employability is an impending graduate skills module that offers a variety of professional skills to support the development of the graduate's early career. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Undertake a critical audit of their skills and capabilities for their professional career

2.

Employ the correct communication approach (presentation, poster, report) and use reference material correctly.

3.

Demonstrate professional ethics in engineering,  including the role of an engineer in society, environmental and health, safety & risk issues.

4.

Interpret the roles of teams and leadership.

5.

Prepare a personal development plan and work preparation plan (including CV, Cover letter).

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Two hour interactive weekly workshop where each of the 4 sections are explored.

Computer room required.

Module Assessment Strategies

Research, Referencing and Presenting - write a paper

Engineering Ethics  - present a case study on ethical/unethical engineering

Understanding Oneself - online tests, e.g. Belbin, Myers Briggs etc

Job Readiness - develop online professional profile, CV, PDP and cover letter

Repeat Assessments

Repeat of the Continuous assessments over the summer.

Research, Referencing and Presenting

  • The importance of good academic sources
  • Plagiarism and Referencing
  • The use of reference management tools such as endnote
  • Journal Paper layout
  • Poster Presentations
  • Presentation techniques

Engineering Ethics

  • Discussion around professional ethics.
  • Describe the main aspects of the Institution of Engineers code of ethics.
    • The engineers should show knowledge and awareness of  :
      • Engineers role in society
      • Social and environmental factors in the design process
      • Common environmental hazards
      • Potential health, safety and risk issues of engineering projects.
  • Case study - unethical engineering

Understanding Oneself

  • Varying Personality types, and their associated strengths and weaknesses 
  • Self-tests using online resources to establish personality type
  • Self-tests to establish team role
  • Working within a team
  • Leadership styles
  • Team roles, where do you fit? 
  • Personal Development Plan
  • Ability to plan and develop self-directed Continuing Professional Development (lifelong learning) to improve their knowledge and competence.

Job Readiness

  • Develop a career action plan
  • Describe the elements of the recruitment process
  • Write an effective CV and Cover Letter
  • Describe and demonstrate how to prepare for interview and approach interview questions
  • Describe and demonstrate  the process of networking and improve skills
