This module builds upon the fundamentals of mechanical and machine design elements taught in the mechanical engineering. The module provides a systematic approach to the design of mechanical systems with fixed and moveable joints. Students will apply standards and design codes to solve the real world mechanical design problems with combined loading on components. The module aims at implementing comprehensive design projects of mechanical systems involving CAD modelling, finite element analysis, and validation of computational results with the analytical findings.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Select appropriate material in the context of the engineering design process.


Analyse component failure under various loading conditions.


Design and selection of key mechanical system components, including shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys, springs, and couplings.


Design of common mechanical fastening methods for mechanical assemblies.


Design a mechanical system for specific tasks with suitable dimensions of components and arrangement using CAD software.


Analyse structural stability of mechanical systems through finite element analyses.


Apply standards and design codes (SKF, AGMA, DIN, etc.) of machine elements in design projects worked in teams.


Present technical reports on the design of machine elements and creating new design prototypes.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The Teaching and Learning strategy employed here is a combination of taught classes, assignments, and practical laboratory sessions where the student will actively use software in the design and analysis of mechanical systems.

Module Assessment Strategies

The Module is assessed by 50% final exam and 50% in class assessment. The CA will include mid term exam amd lab work using software.

Repeat Assessments

Students will be given the opportunity to take a repeat examination.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Review design methodology, synthesis, creativity and conceptualization.
  2. Review design of shafts, keys, cotters, and couplings based on strength and rigidity and apply it in shaft mounting problems.
  3. Review design of different bearings and study their selection according to application. 
  4. Review design of gears and solve gear application problems by using industry used standards.
  5. Review belts, ropes, pulleys, and chains drive design problems. 
  6. Review design of bolts, rivets, and welded joints.
  7. Review design of washers and springs.
  8. Finite element analysis:  structural loads analysis of mechanical assemblies and joints
