DSGN08070 2019 Product Design 7 (Design Thinking)
The broad aim of this module is to provide an environment for students to apply creative, critical and reflective faculties in relation to real life design solutions. The students work on professional design project from products, systems, services, and interactions in conjunction with external clients, bodies and agencies.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Conduct design research to inform design decisions and innovation
Incorporate design thinking strategies on how research and insights informed design solutions
Applying design thinking to iterate, develop, test and refine the design solutions.
Reflect on the significance of multidisciplinary approaches to problems
Present coherent and reflective arguments to support design strategies and decisions
Communicate strategically the role and value of design in entrepreneurial and professional contexts
Module Assessment Strategies
The nuturing of student-centred learning and assessement is reflected in the assessment strategy of this Product Design module. Predominately formative, the continuous assessment of design project work involves developmental feedback that addresses various evidence-based implications for design practice. The assessment targets analytical, technical, R&D, transferable, social and applied design skills in general.
The integration of written, oral and visual presentations as assessment deliverables and activities are fundamental to this strategy.
Where possible, there is an emphasis put on interactions with external bodies and clients in both the negotiation and creation of meaningful student-centered assessment.
The students undertake a professional design project (products, systems, services and interactions). The design content concentrates on:
Design Research, Concept Generation, Development, Design Innovation, Detailed Design, CAD, Prototyping, Communication & Design Presentation.
