DSGN06084 2013 Building Science andTechnology 2b Environment and Materials
This module develops three thematic areas- i) Structure –An introduction to a range of basic structural systems, strategies and material choices. Introduction to existing structural systems, defects, failures and possible interventions. ii) Environmental Building Design-The use of basic manual calculations and analysis. Exploration of building performance- comfort, health and energy efficiency. The principles behind current low energy solutions to servicing strategies. Exploration of basic structural elements and the integration of building services. iii) Materials, detailing & Assembly-A more detailed exploration of the properties, nature and environmental impacts of a variety of materials, fixings and assembly techniques used in contemporary construction and interiors.
On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;
Rationalise the main principles of passive design and discuss constructively the collection, storage, distribution, and utilisation of energy in passive strategies.
Explain the principles of architectural physics through their application to simple spaces and forms using basic numerical and graphical procedures
Propose day-lighting, heating and cooling strategies appropriate to a specific site and brief, identifying influences for a healthy and comfortable building environment.
Spell out in detail the variety, properties and typical usage of typical materials and finishes used in traditional and modern construction.
Give details about materials, strategies, elements and fire as applied to the basic analysis, design and selection of simple structural systems.
Module Assessment Strategies
Formative and summative assessment modes using a range of techniques which includes individual work, mainly essays, projects, tests presentations, and debate.
Materials, detailing & Assembly-
- Students are introduced to the practical implications of a range of standard structural strategies and material choices in the context of works to existing buildings. The focus is on issues relating to assembly, integration of services, material properties and detailing. This topic is supported by case studies and is linked to a studio project.
- Sustainability in the specification of materials (linked to studio project).
- A detailed and creative exploration of the aesthetic, tactile, optical and mechanical possibilities of a selection of materials, fixings, finishes and assembly techniques as applied in an interior context (linked to a studio project).
Environmental Building Design-
- An introduction to the principles by which a building interacts with the external environment through its fabric, focussing on moisture, air, heat, light.
- Exploration of building performance to achieve a successful design for comfort, health and energy efficiency (buildings, services and occupants as a system).
- Exploration of a range of case studies which illustrate the principles, strategies and application of current low energy and passive solutions to servicing, focussing on heat, light, sound and air quality.
- An introduction to the building regulations and energy rating systems (to be developed in 3rd year).
- Calculations of u-values as applied to a design studio project.
- The integration of building services is explored in relation to system distribution strategies (as applied to a studio project).
This module develops the students understanding of loading and forces. This knowledge can be applied to a studio project (e.g. loading calculations and load path diagrams of existing building and proposed design). Students are introduced to the structural implications of a range of standard structural strategies and material choices in the context of works to existing buildings. Students explore case studies of existing structural systems- basic analysis, defects and interventions. This may be linked to a studio project (linked to materials, detailing and assembly above).
