This module is intended to develop the learners design, communication, collaboration and management skills within a BIM CDE environment.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Create and present basic Revit Models and details and schedules


Manage and share content of Revit models compentently


Assess and use Building Information Modelling within the construction industry


Interrogate BIM models using collaboration software.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques which will comprise mainly of  front-loaded online resources such as recorded tutorials, augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student-learning needs. A learning platform such as Moodle will be used to upload educational material (i.e. tutorial  recordings plus supplementary reading material) and as a means of assessment (e.g. uploading
assignments and projects). This blended approach (lectures and pre-recorded tutorials) allows students work at their own pace.

Module Assessment Strategies

  1. Mid term summative and formative assessment.
  2. Major summative project of a Revit model.
  3. Summative final exam  -  Both project and final exam are compulsory pass.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat submission of outstanding CA & project and final exam for Autumn exam boards.

Indicative Syllabus

  1. Model creation for framed buildings - walls, curtain walls, columns, beams and floors, roofs, components and family creation, groups, stairs, shafts, extrusions, railings
  2. Sections, call-outs, detailing and drafting views for framed buildings.
  3. Portal framed buildings.
  4. Schedules - wall, windows, finishes etc, applying costings to schedules.
  5. Introduction to BIM 360 services & Navisworks for combining models; viewing, sectioning, interrogating and clash detection.
  6. Introduction to 4D and 5D.
