The aim of this module is to develop the students understanding of the role and context of management and its application to the construction industry.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Describe the roles and duties of the construction manager at the pre-contract and post-contract stages of a construction project.


Explain the requirements for the appropriate management of on-site resources.


Apply alternative site setup and management organisational structures to varying complex construction sites.


Demonstrate an understanding of the health and safety obligations on construction sites and evaluate health and safety risk.


Describe the elements of quality control, quality assurance and total quality management.

Continuous assessment and final examination.

Indicative Syllabus

1. The construction process, site classification, site layout and organisation, security and environmental issues.

2. Resources - materials, control, monitoring, waste minimisation. Plant and equipment, acquisition, maintenance, safety.

3. Introduction to the concept of quality, site diary, records.

4. Contract supervision, control, objectives, techniques.

5. Work study, productivity, method study, application.

6. Health and safety requirements.

7. Duties of the Construction Manager throughout the construction process.
