Description

The student will be able to design, configure, verify and troubleshoot a converged switched network for both a wired and wireless LAN in a small to medium sized business.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Design a network based on the Hierarchial Network Design model

2.

Examine features and functionality necessary for the implementation of secure wireless and wired network.

3.

Configure, verify and troubleshoot a Layer 2 Switch with VLANs, STP, VTP and security.

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment will take place in a laboratory environment employing simulation techniques as well as hands on testing using approved industry standard equipment

Indicative Syllabus

LAN Design

  •   Hierarchial Network Design Module
  •   Matching switches to specific LAN functions - features needed for small and medium business

Switch Components and Configurations

  •   Design considerations for Ethernet networks
  •   Frame forwarding using a switching - symmetric/asymmetric switch, buffering, forwarding methods
  •   Switch management configuration - CLI, history, boot sequence, basic management
  •   Configuring switch security - passwords, login banners, telnet, ssh, common attacks, port security

VLANs

  •   VLAN Types, port memberships
  •   Trunking
  •   Configure, validate and troubleshoot trunks

VTP

  •   Domains, modes, advertising, pruning
  •   Configure, validate and troubleshoot VTP
  •   Manage VLANs

STP

  •   Redundancy issues
  •   Spanning Tree algorithm - BPDU, BID, port states
  •   Spanning convergence - Election of root bridge, root ports, designated ports
  •   PVST+, RSTP, Rapid PVST+
  •   Configure, verify and troubleshoot STP

Inter-VLAN Routing

  •   Interfaces, Sub-interfaces
  •   Traditional routing
  •   Router-on-a-Stick
