Description

This module is designed to:

Excite and motivate the learner about his/her chosen field of study.

Clarify the students understanding of the nature of the built environment and the building team.

Cultivate and develop key skills such as creativity, problem solving, communication, leadership, knowledge discovery and team building.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Apply creative thinking and problem solving skills to a given team project. 

2.

Utilise appropriate technology and techniques for acquiring, processing, interpreting and presenting information.

3.

Select the most appropriate medium of communication and communicate effectively in a variety of formats using appropriate technology.

4.

Contribute as a positive, co‑operative and complementary team member in the planning and execution of projects and problem‑solving exercises.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered using blended learning techniques. This will include lectures, workshops, group learning and guest lectures augmented by independent learning and directed learning. This approach is expected to address student learning needs. Moodle will be used to upload educational material. This blended approach (lectures and workshops) brings students together to facilitate group learning’.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 100% Continuous Assessment.

Assessment will be  through, individual presentation, group competition performance, report writing and peer/self-assessment.

Indicative Syllabus

Non‑technical: Team exercise to act as an ice‑breaker and introduction to team‑work.

Team skills: Stages in team building, running effective teams, consensus building and conflict resolution.

Team projects to include community involvement, research, creativity and problem solving, design, working drawings, costing testing report writing and presentations.

Computing skills: Searching and browsing the Internet, correct use of and reliability of information, word processing, spreadsheet presentations. (Tables, illustrations, links, symbols and media. Design themes. Slide show animation and transitions. Viewing, reviewing, and printing. Saving, exporting and sharing.) Presentation and design software.

Verbal communication skills: Planning and presenting an oral presentation, structuring information, presenting, eye contact, use of gesture, voice projection, team choreography, Q/A sessions, functions of non‑verbal communication.

Written communication: Writing summaries, reports and document preparation.
