Description

The aim of this module is to introduce the theory and practice of communication in the context of working within a team or small group. Through interactive workshops learners will engage in developing critical thinking and creative skills.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Evaluate the communication behaviour of individuals and groups.

2.

Colloborate effectively in groups, teams and meetings.

3.

Demonstrate decision-making, critical thinking and creativity tools.

4.

Apply information tools and communication aids in a work-based context.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delieverd from a problem-based learning approach.

Module Assessment Strategies

 

This module will be delivered through problem-based learning and the assessment will address the individual student's participation in the group process and the product of the group's activities. The emohasis will be on project work and performance evaluation.

Repeat Assessments

Students will be required to complete a portfolio or to repeat attend the group assessment as determined by performance. 

Indicative Syllabus

1. Communication Behaviour:

  • Explain the Communication Process including communication media, noise and perception.
  • Examine communication behavioural styles including transactional analysis, assertive, aggressive and passive behaviour.
  • Appreciate how groups and teams develop, types of roles and the factors that influence group communication.

2. Facilitation Skills:

  • Define facilitation in a group communication context.
  • Practice active listening.
  • Explore conflict management and consensus building.

3. Decision-making and Creative Thinking Tools:

  • Appreciate the decision-making process.
  • Introduce and explore the concept of creativity.
  • Display creative thinking tools like Brainstorming, Nominal Group Tehnique, Mindmapping and De Bono's Six Thinking Hats.
  • Types of reasoning, making arguments and counter-arguments and critical thinking.

4.  Effective Presentations:

  • Awareness of types of presentations.
  • Appreciate the structure of an audience-centred presentation.
  • Demonstrate competent and effective use of communication aids.
  • Outline strategies for managing anxiety.
