Description

This module covers advanced topics in chemistry in the physical and organic synthetic chemistry areas that are relevant to forensic chemistry. These include syntheses and purification of drugs, synthesis of polymeric material, reaction kinetics, surface chemistry and combustion reactions.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Describe organic synthetic pathways and suitable purification methods for natural drug products.

2.

Characterise polymeric materials and describe the mechanisms involved in their synthesis

3.

Evaluate the by products of organic synthesis

4.

Describe comprehensively the chemistry of kinetics, catalysis, surface phenomenon and combustion reactions

5.

To apply complex mathemathetical formulae to calculate reaction rates etc. of different chemical processes.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module will be delivered full-time.  It includes lectures augmented by independent learning and self directed learning. This approach is expected to meet learning needs.

Module Assessment Strategies

This module is 30% continuous assessment and 70% final exam.

The continuous assessment may be broken down into a series of short answer test in class to ensure principles of each topic are understood.  More indepth knowledge and problem solving required for the final exam.

Repeat Assessments

Repeat Continuous Assessment and/or Repeat Final Exam
