Description

This module  introduces students to  the fundamentals of physical and organic chemistry needed for an understanding of chemical hazards.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Discuss and explain core concepts in physical and organic chemistry

2.

Relate the physical and chemical properties of organic molecules to their chemical structures.

3.

Discuss and explain the chemical reactions and chemical hazards of selected organic compounds

4.

Conduct practical work competently in a safe and responsible manner.

5.

Communicate and present scientific information in a variety of forms both individually and in groups.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module is a combination of both theory and practical in organic and physical chemistry.

Module Assessment Strategies

The module will be assessed on the basis of continuous assessment (theory and practical) and final theory examination.

Laboratory skills and report-writing ability are assessed as part of the practical work performed during the module. Regular summative tests are used to encourage engagement with the module, monitor progress and provide feedback.

Repeat Assessments

As per School policy
