Description

This module enables the student to construct a problem-based spreadsheet and develop a business web site

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

implement a complex spreadsheet from a text-based scenario

2.

develop a web site that incorporates various forms of media

3.

acquire an understanding of the theoretical aspects of the business environment

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Practical demonstrations, lectures, class discussions, case studies and audio/video clips will be used to facilitate the learning process

Module Assessment Strategies

Learning outcomes will be assessed through the creation of applications which address practical real-world problems. Assessments will incorporate design and implementation elements.  All topics are to be taught using Problem-Based Learning techniques

Students are required to achieve at least a passing grade (40%) in the continuous assessment component of this module and minimum grade of 30% in the final theory examination, while achieving a passing grade overall

Repeat Assessments

Students may be required to repeat all components of the module or just the component they have failed. The Examination Board (under the guidance of the lecturer) will determine the Repeat Requirements for each student

Spreadsheet Applications Development

  • using problem-based learning to build a spreadsheet solution
  • structuring a spreadsheet - design, layout, presentation
  • dealing with risk and uncertainty - sensitivity analysis, goal seek, scenarios
  • utilising functions - financial, date & time, statistical, lookup & reference, text, logical, information, sub-totals
  • manipulating data - sort, filter, pivot tables
  • developing dashboards
  • building data validation into a spreadsheet
  • integrating with other software - importing and exporting data

 Web Development

  • using web development tools - online tools/CMS (eg WordPress) versus locally installed software (eg Adobe Dreamweaver)
  • adding content - text, images, video, audio, hyperlinks
  • organising content - tables, columns, menus
  • creating/modifying images using various tools - eg Photoshop, PicMonkey, Picasa, Pixlr, Paint

  • eCommerce - definition, types, advantages, disadvantages, payment systems (eg paypal, gateway systems)
