Description

The overall aim of this module is to enhance the students’ knowledge of solid modelling and ability to produce professional engineering drawings.  Students will be introduced to specialist weldment, framework and sheet metal modules and will undertake complex solid modelling, including the use of 3D sketching, equations and configurations.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;

1.

Utilise 3D sketching techniques in the creation of complex part and product design.

2.

Design models and create drawings of fabricated parts and structural steel frameworks using specialist ‘Weldments’ module.

3.

Design models and create drawing for sheet metal parts using specialist sheet metal tools.

4.

Use design tables and equations to create configurations, multiple variations and ‘family of parts’.

5.

Create complex part and assembly models and produce working drawings and documentation necessary to detail design project work.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

In addition to the normal CAD lectures and practical classes, Designers / Engineering Practitioners working in industry will be invited as guest lecturers and site visits to companies will be arranged, where possible.

Module Assessment Strategies

Continuous assessment will involve the assessment of all assignments undertaken in class, design project activity completed independently and an end of term in-house assessment test.

Indicative Syllabus

3D Sketches: 3D sketching tools, space handle, planes, points, lines, splines, coordinate system, 3D relations and dimensions.

Frameworks: Weldment module, structural members, groups, trimming options, gussets and caps, weld beads, welding symbols, cutting lists, drawing of weldments and structures.

Sheet Metal: Sheet metal module, bend allowance and relief, flanges, tabs, edges, bends, corners, flattening, bending and unbending, forming tools, drawings of sheet metal parts.

Configurations: Equations interface, rules and syntax, variables, linked values, sharing between models, macros, creation of design tables, formatting, parameters, multiple parts, configurations, family of parts, custom properties and property manager.

Drawing: Modelling, drawing and detailing of complex mechanical parts, products and design project work, including drawings for structural frameworks and sheet metal parts.
