The module will expand and develop on skills and knowledge gained in Building Science and Technology 3.  It will develop the notion of the integration of other technical disciplines to interior architecture.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the learner will/should be able to;


Predict likely physical and energy performance in design solutions in consideration the requirements for human health, comfort and safety using the relevant physics and manual, computer and physical modelling techniques.


Apply the relevant technology involved in the refurbishment, maintenance and conservation of existing buildings. 


Evaluate characteristics and integrate a variety, of structural solutions, materials and services used in construction and interiors.


Evaluate how the main services and technologies are integrated into the interiors of typical buildings

Module Assessment Strategies

Teaching and Learning Modes:

Lectures and tutorials accompanied by related short exercises carried out in students' own time. Delivery synchronised with major design project.

Methods of Assessments:

Formative and summative assessment modes using a range of techniques which includes group and/or individual work such as: essays, projects, presentations, debate.

Indicative Syllabus

This module has a core theme as Follows:

Passive & Active Refurbishment Strategies

Lecture 01 Passive Design and Passive upgrade of Buildings, This lecture will focus on strategies for upgrading a building, for which thermal comfort can be achieved solely by post-heating or post-cooling of the fresh air mass by non-mechanical needs, thus making the building thermally and energy efficient.

Lecture 02 – 06 Retrofit and Building Analysis: How do Buildings respond to changes both Man made and Environmental?  These lectures will focus on existing buildings (recent and old) analysing how they respond to architectural interventions, changes to activities and use patterns, structural and non-structural implications, refurbishment, adaptive re-use and upgrade strategies, policy framework (Fire, Ventilation, Safety, Acoustic, Health & Well-Being ) and finally building fabric analysis, Interior fit-out and climate change and environment.

Lecture 07 Noise and Sound Insulation and Acoustics

This lecture will deal with the technical aspects of noise, sound insulation and environmental factors that effect human health, airborne and impact, the lecture will also discuss policy & regulation and finally it will close with discussions around the nature of acoustics and sound quality.   

Lecture 08 - 09 Energy Performance of Buildings and Daylight.  

These lectures will focus on, firstly Energy & Buildings, EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) Energy rating approaches in other countries it also discusses a number of the many methods available internationally for assessing the energy, environmental and sustainability performance of buildings. Secondly it will discuss the Biological Effect of Daylight, Natural Light Theory, and Light, properties of Light, Energy Efficient Lighting, and Key Criteria for Selecting a Lamp.

Lecture 10 - 11 Intelligent Buildings and optimising Building Services and their integration.

These lectures will be formulated around empirical evidence from the filed that argues that a greater understanding of how buildings actually function and, more specifically, redefine design, assumptions regarding the way that occupants engage with buildings and control service strategies and Post occupancy Evaluation.
